Formerly of NPR and ABC News
Richard L. Harris (Washington). Harris is former director of afternoon news programming at NPR, where he supervised “All Things Considered,” “Talk of the Nation” and “Tell Me More.” While there he also served as interim managing editor. Previously he spent 19 years as senior producer for ABC News’ “Nightline” and was also senior producer for “This Week with George Stephanopoulos.” For “Nightline,” he developed a series of conversations between anchor Ted Koppel and Morrie Schwartz, a Brandeis University sociology professor dying of Lou Gehrig’s disease, that prompted reporter Mitch Albom to visit his former professor and resulted in the best-selling book Tuesdays with Morrie. He also produced town meetings between Israelis and Palestinians in Jerusalem and between blacks and whites in South Africa. In addition, he collaborated with Koppel at the Discovery Channel on a town meeting on the collision between national security and civil liberties in the aftermath of the Sept. 11 attacks.
