How to Volunteer

The News Literacy Project is seeking active and retired print, broadcast and online journalists who are interested in participating in the program on a volunteer basis. If you’ve been a reporter, editor, producer, photographer or videographer—with work experience running the gamut from hard news to features, politics to sports, and everything in between—you’re welcome to join us.

Participation will vary according to a journalist’s availability, location and background. A typical engagement will involve a series of classroom appearances, one or more videoconferences or supervision of an after-school media club. Specific assignments will be based upon journalists’ schedules and will be coordinated by NLP staff.  Journalist fellows will not be asked to travel outside their own communities.

NLP staff will provide orientation, training, coordination and oversight. Journalists will be given a basic curriculum, including handouts, assignments and PowerPoint or video presentations and a menu of interactive exercises. The journalist will be asked to share some of his or her most compelling work with the students as part of a presentation or as the framework for an exercise. Journalists will be asked to provide feedback on their experiences to the project.

The first pilots will be launched in early 2009. In the meantime, NLP will build a national directory of fellows with the goal of dramatically expanding the program in the future. To volunteer, please fill out this form. Project staff will contact you about opportunities to participate.

If you have any questions, please send them to: info@thenewsliteracyproject.org. Thank you.
